Ukraine is a landlocked country in central Europe on the Black Sea. Much of the land is steppe, generally flat and treeless. Along the border with Belarus are forested, marshy plains.
Summers are warm and winters are cold, with somewhat milder conditions in the Crimea. Ukraine is rich in natural resources. Agriculture, livestock raising and viticulture are important. Coal mining, iron and steel production are the main industries.
The population of about 53.000.000 live in an area of about 604.000 square kilometers. Languages spoken are Ukrainian, Russian and regional dialects.
The capital of the Ukraine is Kiev.
